Let the student now gather the sharps or flats used in constructing each Scale and place them in a group immediately after the Clef-sign, thus: |

Each of these is known as the Signature of its respective Scale. In writing Signatures, it is customary, to place the sharps or flats in the order of their entrance into the Scales.
The Scales with their Signatures and the numbers and names of sharps or flats in each must now be memorized by the student. |
